Komodo photo trip by boat: light, stops and what the fare leaves out
Updated 20 October 2026
Padar at first light, the Kalong bat flight at dusk and the reef at Pink Beach are the photo stops on the NK Jaya routes. Photo and video documentation is not included on a private charter and is quoted separately. A drone needs its own park permit.
What the boat looks like in the frame
NK Jaya 1 has a white hull with varnished teak topsides, two masts and a long bowsprit with a railed platform in the photos. It is a good subject from the water and from the air. If you plan to shoot the boat itself, ask the crew where the tender can go.
Inside, the photos show teak cabin walls and window rows facing the sea. A wide lens suits rooms like these.
NK Jaya 2 photos are from an earlier set, so we describe them less. Ask for what you want to shoot, and we answer in writing for your boat and date.
Ask about the tender if you want a shot of the hull. The crew decides what is safe on the day.
Light on the route
Padar gives the first light. Sunrise falls around 05:30 in November and 06:20 in July, and the climb takes 25 to 45 minutes. The sunrise table on the Padar page shows the month.
Pink Beach looks its pale pink best in soft light. Mornings are calmer, and the crowd peaks from 10:00 to 14:00 in high season. Taka Makassar, a crescent sandbank, shows only at low tide, which gives you a shape that exists for a few hours.
Kalong gives the evening. The bats leave about 15 minutes after sunset and fly out over roughly 30 minutes. A long lens and a charged battery pay off there.
Kit check: spare batteries, a lens cloth, a dry bag, a waterproof pouch for the phone, a headlamp for Padar.
Cameras, drones and documentation
A private charter does not include a photographer or video documentation at any length. Both are quoted separately, when you ask.
Drones need a park permit. A drone needs its own park permit, so tell us before you pack one.
Salt is the enemy. Rinse the camera with a damp cloth after each landing, keep it in a dry bag on the tender and never change a lens on deck in spray.
This is not a photo workshop. It is a boat with beautiful stops. You bring the eye, and we bring you to the places.
A shooting plan for the 3 days 2 nights list
Day 1 is soft light and small frames. The Kelor viewpoint looks over the bay, Manjarite is a reef stop, and Kalong closes the day with sunset and the bat stream.
Day 2 is the big one: Padar, Long Beach, Komodo Island, Taka Makassar and Manta Point. Padar gives the ridge and three bays. Long Beach gives pale sand and reef.
Taka Makassar gives a sandbank that shows only at low tide. Manta Point gives a drift, so shoot with a wrist strap.
Day 3 is one morning swim at Siaba and the sail home.
Stops follow the tide and the captain's plan, so the light at each one changes from trip to trip. Tell us what you want to shoot and we answer for your date.
FAQ
Where is the best light for photos on the NK Jaya routes?
Padar at first light, Pink Beach in soft morning light and Kalong at dusk. Sunrise at Padar falls around 05:30 in November and 06:20 in July. The bats leave Kalong about 15 minutes after sunset, over roughly 30 minutes. Stops don't have fixed clock times, so we confirm the plan for your date.
Is there a photographer on board?
Not as a standard. Photo and video documentation is not included on a private charter at any length. It is quoted separately when you ask. For the open trip, we confirm what is possible with your date.
How do I protect camera gear from salt?
Keep it in a dry bag on the tender, wipe it with a damp cloth after each landing and change lenses in a dry place, not in spray. A waterproof pouch protects a phone at Pink Beach. Salt on a sensor costs more than a pouch.
Can I take photos underwater at the snorkel stops?
Yes, with a waterproof camera or a sealed pouch for your phone. There are five snorkel stops on the 3 days 2 nights route. Keep the strap around your wrist at Manta Point, where the current moves you along. Rinse the pouch in fresh water after each swim.
