Manta Point snorkel: a current drift on the longer NK Jaya routes

Updated 20 October 2026

Manta Point is a drift snorkel along a reef, with a current that runs from mild to strong. Plan 30 to 60 minutes in the water. It is on the 3 days 2 nights and 4 days 3 nights routes of NK Jaya 1 and NK Jaya 2. Mantas are common in some months and never guaranteed.

A drift, not a pool

Manta Point is not a lagoon. You enter the water and the current carries you along the reef. The boat drops you upstream rather than anchoring, and follows to pick you up.

How strong the current runs depends on the day. Published guides call it mild to moderate at its best, at slack or on a rising tide, and a pleasant drift.

A third calls it strong at times. We give the range and no single figure.

Plan 30 to 60 minutes in the water. Wear a life jacket if the current worries you. The boats carry them, and nobody on the tender will think less of you.

  • Manta Point, day 2, late in the day. Drift along the reef, mantas hoped for and never promised.

Depth, size and how the water feels

Mantas gather at cleaning stations on the reef, and the feeding drift runs closer to the surface. A snorkeler sees the top layer, so the view depends on where the mantas feed that day.

They are wide animals, wider than a person with arms out. Seeing one under you is a calm and strange moment, since nothing about the animal looks hurried.

Visibility runs about 15 to 20 m on good days and 10 to 12 m in the wet season. The water is warm, 25 to 29 C across the year, but on upwelling days Manta Point can drop to about 22 C. A rash guard helps in the shiver months.

These are typical ranges for the site, not measurements from our boats. Treat them as the pattern, not a promise.

When mantas show up, and when they do not

Reef mantas are present year-round at their cleaning stations. Most guides put the biggest gatherings from December to March, with January and February strongest. Operators also list July to September as good.

Sightings depend on the tide and the current. That is why the order of Manta Point and Taka Makassar often swaps on a given day. The captain reads the water and picks the order that gives the better odds.

On NK Jaya 1 and NK Jaya 2 the stop is on two routes. On the 3 days 2 nights route it is stop 8, the last on day 2, with dinner and free time. On the 4 days 3 nights route it is stop 5, on day 2, with free time and a snack.

We can't promise a manta. If you are going for mantas alone, pick a month in the range and a longer route, and keep a second reason in your pocket. The reef is a decent second reason.

Kit and a note on manners

Bring a snug mask, a rash guard and reef-safe sunscreen. Keep your hands to yourself in the water. Mantas are wild animals, and the rule at any site is to look and not touch.

  • Mask that seals, tested on land.
  • Rash guard for sun and cool upwelling water.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen, applied before you board the tender.
  • A waterproof camera on a wrist strap, if you have one.
  • Patience. Some drifts show you nothing and the next shows you everything.

Park entry is paid per person per day, IDR 250,000 for a foreign visitor, and snorkeling is covered by that ticket.

Respect the distance. A manta that feels crowded leaves, and then nobody sees it.

FAQ

How deep is Manta Point?

Komodo National Park knowledge puts the site at 3 to 15 m deep, with a current that can run strong. A snorkeler sees the surface layer, so the view depends on where the mantas feed. These are general site figures, not NK Jaya measurements, and the crew guides the drift.

How long do we stay in the water at Manta Point?

Plan 30 to 60 minutes. You drift with the current along the reef and the boat follows to collect you. It's listed as free time, not a fixed number of minutes, so the crew sets the exact length on the day.

Why do boats swap Manta Point and Taka Makassar?

Sightings depend on the tide and the current, so captains swap the order on the day for better odds. On paper, 3 days 2 nights puts Taka Makassar first and 4 days 3 nights puts Manta Point first, and both can change.

How big are the mantas?

Wide enough to look huge from the surface, and the animals are wild. Mantas are common at the site but never guaranteed. They move slowly, keep their own pace, and the encounter feels unhurried. Keep your hands to yourself, stay horizontal and let the current carry you past.

Is Manta Point on the day tour?

No. Manta Point appears only on the 3 days 2 nights and 4 days 3 nights routes. The one-day tour and the 2 days 1 night route do not reach it. If mantas matter, book a longer route and a month in the December to March range.
