First time in Indonesia: visa, money, phones and port rules for Komodo
Updated 20 October 2026

Passport, visa and arrival card

Tips are not in the boat fare. The table lists a common range for a boat crew per guest per day, and a tip is never compulsory.

The boarding pass and the harbor master
The harbor master's office issues each boat's sailing permit, and the park office controls access to the park. Passengers need an electronic boarding pass, and the name on it must match the passenger list.
That's why we ask for names exactly as they appear in your passport. A mismatch can stop a guest at the pier.
Closures happen. The harbor master can close sailings at a day's notice, most often in the wet season. If a boat can't sail, our replacement-boat guarantee applies.
| Who decides | The harbour master's office (KSOP Labuan Bajo) issues each boat's sailing permit; the park office (Balai Taman Nasional Komodo) controls access to the park |
|---|---|
| Boarding pass | Passengers on boats to the park need an electronic boarding pass, and the name on it must match the passenger list; your boat company registers you |
| Safety on board | The harbour master's guideline requires life jackets and liferafts sufficient for everyone on board, no more passengers than the boat's capacity, and a weather check before each sailing permit |
| Recent closures | 1 to 8 February 2025: Komodo and Padar closed, Rinca only. 29 December 2025 to 4 February 2026: staged closures, with all tourist boats held from 14 to 20 January 2026. 6 to 8 August 2026: Komodo and Padar closed for waves and wind, Rinca open. |

FAQ
Do I need a visa for a Komodo trip?
It depends on your passport. Nationals of 97 listed countries can get a 30-day visa on arrival, and ASEAN citizens enter visa-free for 30 days. Others apply in advance at the official immigration site. Check before you fly, because rules and fees change.
Is the arrival card compulsory?
Yes. The All Indonesia arrival card is free and compulsory. Fill it in within 72 hours before arrival, online or in the app. It covers immigration, customs and the health declaration. Save the confirmation on your phone and screenshot the QR code, since the officer at the airport can ask for it.
How much cash should I take to the boat?
Enough for tips, drinks and personal spending, because there are no ATMs in the park or on the islands. ATM withdrawal limits are a few million rupiah at a time, and a local fee applies, so draw cash in town before you sail.
Should I buy an eSIM before I fly?
It is a good idea. Install it at home and activate it on landing. Telkomsel has the widest coverage around Labuan Bajo, but signal can drop between the islands. Download any offline maps and your e-ticket before you sail, and keep the phone in a dry pouch on deck.
