Komodo Island trek: the ranger trail on the NK Jaya routes

Updated 20 October 2026

Every NK Jaya itinerary includes a trek on Komodo Island. It's ranger-led from the Loh Liang station, on short, medium or long trails, and takes 45 to 120 minutes. The dragons are wild, so a sighting is common and never promised. Park entry is paid per person.

The stop on every route

Komodo Island is on all four itineraries, like Padar and Pink Beach. On the one-day tour it is stop 3, the last before the sail home. On the 2 days 1 night and 3 days 2 nights routes it comes on day 2, with lunch. On the 4 days 3 nights route it is stop 7 on day 2, followed by dinner.

It's listed as a trek, and the ranger picks the trail on the day. The ranger chooses the trail, and the park sets what is open that day.

It is not a zoo. The dragons are wild and move as they please.

What it is not: not a zoo: the dragons are wild and sightings are likely but never guaranteed · no trekking without a park ranger

The trail, the ranger and the shoes

Ranger-guided treks start at the Loh Liang station. There are short, medium and long trails. Most day itineraries take the shorter ones, and a walk takes 45 to 120 minutes in total.

You do not walk without a ranger. That rule is the park's, and it is for your safety. Listen to the ranger, stay in a group and keep a distance.

Wear closed shoes. Cover your arms or put on sunscreen, since there is little shade on the trails. Carry water. A small backpack is easier than a bag on your shoulder.

Odds: sightings are common and never guaranteed. A quiet morning on the trail can still be a good walk, with a view across the island and birds in the trees.

Fees and the park system

Park entry is paid per person under national regulation PP 36/2024. A foreign visitor pays IDR 250,000 a day. An Indonesian citizen pays IDR 50,000 on weekdays and IDR 75,000 at weekends and holidays. Ranger and other levies are separate and can change.

Tickets are bought online through SiOra, in each visitor's name. There is no cash at the gate. The fare of NK Jaya 1 and NK Jaya 2 never includes park tickets or ranger charges.

A daily visitor cap has applied since 1 April 2026 at Padar, Rinca and Komodo islands. The figure has been revised during the year. On 6 to 8 August 2026 Komodo and Padar were closed for waves and wind, with Rinca open. If that happens on your dates, the itinerary changes, and the captain picks the next best stop.

Kit for a walk of 45 to 120 minutes

The trail is gentle on the legs and hard on the skin. Dress for sun, not for scrambling.

Closed shoes come first. Add long sleeves or sunscreen, a hat and a bottle of water. A small backpack is easier than a shoulder bag, and it keeps your hands free.

Kit check: closed shoes, hat, sunscreen or sleeves, water bottle, phone on a wrist strap.

Listen to the ranger at the start. They explain the distance to keep and the pace of the group. Follow both, even when a dragon decides to walk closer than you would like.

Leave the drone and the speaker on the boat. Phones are fine. The official bring list says trekking shoes, a backpack, sunblock and sunglasses, and all four earn their place here.

FAQ

Will I see a Komodo dragon?

The dragons are wild and move as they please. The ranger leads you on a trail where they have been seen, but no guide can summon one. Go for the walk and treat a dragon as the prize.

How long is the Komodo Island trek?

Between 45 and 120 minutes, depending on the trail. Short, medium and long trails start at the Loh Liang station, and most day itineraries take the shorter ones. There's no set trail length, so the ranger and the park decide on the day.

Can I trek Komodo Island without a ranger?

No. The park requires a ranger on every trek. The ranger charge is separate from the park entry ticket and from the boat fare. We tell you what to expect before you sail, in writing. The ranger walks in front, sets the pace and decides how close the group gets to a dragon. Follow that rule at every stop.

What should I wear for the Komodo trek?

Closed shoes, long sleeves or sunscreen, and a hat. Shade is thin on the trails, and the sun is strong. Carry water and leave loose items on the boat. Trekking shoes are on the official bring list for a reason. Skip sandals and flip-flops, since the ground is dusty and uneven, and a hat helps with the sun.
