Best months to snorkel Komodo: water, visibility and mantas by month

Updated 20 October 2026

For an NK Jaya trip, Komodo's water runs 25 to 29 C all year. Visibility is best in the dry season, with May at around 20 to 30 m. Mantas are around year-round and most often reported from December to March. Nobody can promise one, and the wet months bring rougher seas and the odd harbor closure.

Water by month

Two seasons. The dry season runs April to November, with little rain and calmer seas, though July and August bring wind and chop on the crossings. The wet season runs December to March, with short heavy downpours and rougher seas from December to February.

The matrix below lays out sea state, visibility, manta odds and crowds for all twelve months. Read it as the general pattern for Komodo National Park. It's not a log kept on NK Jaya 1 or NK Jaya 2.

Water temperature hardly moves: 25 to 29 C across the year, about 28 C in January, 29 C in March and April, and 25 C in August and September. Your mask will fog long before you get cold.

Three months stand out. April is calm and clear. May is the clearest. In September the wind eases, visibility is high and the mantas are still around.

Manta months, and why nobody can promise them

Mantas are wild. They follow the tide and the current, and the sightings follow them. That's why a good month can still give you a quiet morning.

Reef mantas visit their cleaning stations all year. The biggest gatherings tend to come between December and March, with January and February strongest. Sources split between November to February and December to March, so think of it as a range rather than one month.

July to September is good for mantas too. Those months are windier, so you trade more chop for more chances.

Manta Point is on the 3 days 2 nights and 4 days 3 nights routes of NK Jaya 1 and NK Jaya 2. A 2 days 1 night or a day trip doesn't reach it. If mantas are the reason you're coming, pick a longer route and a month in the range, and count any sighting as a bonus.

We can't promise a manta, and neither can anyone else on the water.

Rough months and what to pack for them

January and February have the roughest seas of the year. They also have lower visibility and fewer boats. Some guests love the quiet. Others spend the crossings staring at the horizon.

The seasickness routine is simple. Take your tablet 30 to 60 minutes before you sail. Sleep well, eat a plain breakfast and sit midship on deck. Tell the crew if you feel it coming.

The harbor authority can stop sailings at a day's notice, most often in the wet season and during spells of strong south-east wind. In February 2025 Komodo and Padar were closed for eight days. From late December 2025 into early February 2026 closures came in stages. On 6 to 8 August 2026 Komodo and Padar closed for waves and wind, with Rinca open.

Closures are why every itinerary can change with the weather. If the boat can't sail at all, the replacement-boat guarantee kicks in: equal or higher class on the same dates at no extra cost, or a refund within 14 days.

For the wet months, pack a dry bag for your phone, a light rain jacket and seasickness tablets you've already tried at home.

Visibility and the swell

Visibility is a range, not a promise. It depends on the site and on the day.

May runs around 20 to 30 m and April 20 to 25 m. August sits at about 15 to 25 m. December, January and February drop to 10 to 15 m. Manta Point is murkier, at about 15 to 20 m on good days and 10 to 12 m in the wet season.

Manta Point runs colder too. On upwelling days the water there can drop to about 22 C. A rash guard is worth packing in any month, and a 2 mm shorty helps on the cool days.

For comfort, swell matters as much as visibility. April to June and October to November are calm. July and August are windy. A swell makes a crossing feel longer, not take longer, and a mild pill is cheaper than the regret.

Picking a month for your group

Match the month to the group. Friends after the clearest water should look at April, May, September and October. A group that wants mantas and can handle a bumpy crossing should look at December to March. Solo travelers on the open trip should check dates first, since each sailing is set on its own.

Crowds follow the calendar. July and August are the busiest, and late December fills with holiday travelers. November is quieter, with calm seas and clear water. In the busy months, booking early is the best protection.

Whatever month you pick, give your flight home some slack. The itinerary can change with the weather, and a flight after 14:00 on the last day gives the boat room.

Kit check: a mask you trust, rash guard, reef-safe sunscreen, seasickness tablets, dry bag, sandals with grip.

The short version: send us your month. We'll check your month against the sea and the park, and tell you in writing, before you pay, if the week you picked is a poor one for snorkeling.

FAQ

Is December to March too rough for snorkeling?

The seas are rougher, mostly from December to February, and visibility drops to 10 to 15 m. Plenty of guests go anyway, because mantas are most often seen in these months. If you get seasick easily, pick April to June or October to November, when the sea is calm.

Which month has the clearest water around Komodo?

May, at around 20 to 30 m of visibility, against 10 to 15 m from December to February. April is next at 20 to 25 m. These are general ranges for the park, not measurements taken on NK Jaya 1 or NK Jaya 2.

Does the water get cold at Manta Point?

Sometimes. The park sits at 25 to 29 C across the year, but Manta Point can drop to about 22 C on upwelling days. A rash guard is enough for most people. If you feel the cold, add a 2 mm shorty.

Has the harbor closed Komodo recently?

Yes. Komodo and Padar were closed 1 to 8 February 2025. Boats were held in stages from 29 December 2025 to 4 February 2026, with all tourist boats held 14 to 20 January 2026. Komodo and Padar closed again on 6 to 8 August 2026 for waves and wind.

Which month is quietest on the water?

November, with calm seas, clear water and few boats. January and February are quiet too, though the seas are rough. July and August are the busiest, and late December fills with holiday travelers. The matrix above shows crowds for all twelve months.
