Padar Island trek: the ridge walk on the NK Jaya routes
Updated 20 October 2026
Padar is a ridge viewpoint over three bays on every NK Jaya route, reached by a 25 to 45 minute climb on a loose, steep path. There are no dragons. It is the first stop of the one-day tour, opens day 2 of the 2 days and 3 days routes and day 3 of the 4 days route.
Where Padar sits on the route
Padar is the opener. On the one-day tour it's stop 1, a trek, followed by lunch. On the 2 days 1 night and 3 days 2 nights routes it opens day 2, with breakfast. On the 4 days 3 nights route it opens day 3.
There's no fixed clock time for the Padar landing. On a charter we agree it with you, and on the open trip we confirm it when you book. If first light matters to you, say so when you ask.
- Padar, opening stop of the day. Three bays from the ridge, no dragons up there.
Operators land guests about 65 minutes before sunrise when the plan is first light, so bring a headlamp. The sunrise table further down shows how the start moves with the season.

What it is not: no dragons on Padar · not a beach stop: the point is the ridge viewpoint
Up the ridge, minus the dragons
Count on 25 to 45 minutes to the main viewpoint. The upper ridge takes longer. The path is loose and steep in places, and the grade is moderate.
Go at your own pace and stop when the view asks you to. Nobody is timing you, and the people who stop twice take the best photos.
The view looks over three bays with sand of different colors. That is the reward, and it is a good one.
Padar is not a dragon stop. There are none on the island, and the point of the stop is the ridge, not a beach. The dragons wait at Komodo Island.
Wear shoes with grip, not flip-flops. Take water and sunblock. A hat helps because there is little shade on the way up.

Light by month
Sunrise at Padar falls around 05:30 in November and 06:20 in July, so the start time moves through the year. The table below lists sunrise month by month at the Padar viewpoint.
Use it with the route: if you want to be on the ridge before the sun clears the horizon, count back from the sunrise time on your date. Sixty-five minutes before sunrise is the landing time operators work to, and the climb itself takes 25 to 45 minutes after that.
Crowds peak in July, August and December. Early starts beat the crowd, but they also mean a dark landing. A headlamp costs little and makes the first ten minutes safer.
Pack it the evening before, with fresh batteries, next to your shoes. It is the kind of item that you look for at 04:30 and find at 04:40.
| Month | Sunrise | Leave the boat by | On the ridge by |
|---|---|---|---|

Ticket, quota and drone
Padar needs a park ticket for each visitor. A foreign visitor pays IDR 250,000 per day. An Indonesian citizen pays IDR 50,000 on weekdays and IDR 75,000 at weekends and holidays.
Tickets are bought online in each visitor's name. The fare never includes them.
A daily visitor cap has applied at Padar, Rinca and Komodo island and nearby dive sites since 1 April 2026, in time sessions. The figure has been revised during the year. The boat company checks it when it registers you.
The park or the harbor authority can close Padar for waves and wind. It happened on 6 to 8 August 2026. A closure is one reason every itinerary can change with the weather.
Drones need a park permit. If you want photos or video, ask for documentation, quoted separately on a private charter.
FAQ
How hard is the Padar climb?
Moderate. The main viewpoint takes about 25 to 45 minutes, and the path is loose and steep in parts. Most healthy walkers manage it at their own pace. The upper ridge takes longer, so decide at the viewpoint whether to go on.
Are there Komodo dragons on Padar?
No. Padar is a ridge viewpoint with no dragons. The point of the stop is the view of three bays with differently colored sand. For dragons, the Komodo Island trek is on every route. Don't plan a dragon photograph for the climb. Plan it for Komodo Island, with a ranger beside you.
What shoes do I need for Padar?
Closed shoes or trail sandals with grip. Parts of the path are loose and steep, and trekking shoes are on the official bring list. Flip-flops are a bad idea. Bring a hat and water, because there is little shade on the climb.
Can I fly a drone at Padar?
Only with a park permit. If you want photos or video of the trip, ask for documentation, which is not included on a private charter and is quoted separately.
When is sunrise at Padar?
Around 05:30 in November and 06:20 in July, with the other months between. The sunrise table on this page lists every month. There's no fixed landing time, so we confirm the plan for your date in writing. Pack a headlamp for the climb, because operators land guests about 65 minutes before sunrise.
